About NSS

The National Service Scheme owes its origin to the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed that the first duty of the students was not to treat their period of study as an opportunity for intellectual luxury, but to prepare themselves for final dedication in the service of society. In the post-independence era, the University Grants Commission headed by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan recommended introduction of National Service Scheme in the academic institutions on a voluntary basis with a view to developing healthy contacts between the students and teachers on the one hand and establishing a constructive linkagebetween the campus and the community on the other hand.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on September 24, 1969 in order to promote social consciousness, a sense ofresponsibility, and a sense of discipline and dignity of labour among college students. The scheme utilizes the leisure time betweencollege studies of students, in various item of social service, which not only helps the community, but also develop the personalityof students. The Moto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the ssence of democra_c living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSShelps the students, develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to other living beings.

National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme is a community service programme sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This scheme promotes national solidarity. It would be possible to awaken the villagers and slum dwellers to their responsibilities and develop the confidence, to tackle their common problems with energy, enthusiasm and in a co-operative spirit, based on mutual aid and self-reliance. The role of students is limited as activists, enablers, catalytic agents or liaison with wider communities and as programme aids.

The Motto of NSS

The motto of the National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. This express the essence of democratic living and upholds the need to appreciate the other man’s point of view first and to show consideration for fellow human beings. It also underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole. Therefore, the aim of the NSS is to demonstrate this motto in its days to day programme.

Symbol

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, the symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

Badge

The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
